‘Living Autobiographies. Listen to Our Stories’

‘Speak the change you wish to see’

As my contribution to International Stuttering Awareness Day, which falls each year on October 22nd, I am organizing what I hope will become an annual event at my local library. On Saturday, October 23, 2021, a group of local residents and myself from my town of Foley, Alabama will gather around the common area of the Foley Public Library and tell our personal stories to anyone who wishes to listen. I first heard of this idea when I read a Facebook post about the Human Library Organization, which originated in Denmark (http://humanlibrary.org). The purpose of the Human Library is to “Challenge stereotypes and prejudices through dialog.” The event I’m planning will focus on spreading Stuttering Awareness for myself and the Stuttering Community at large but will also provide a place for others to tell their stories, whatever they may be.

Everyone has a story to tell. Everyone is stronger than they know. Through telling our stories we inspire others to find their courage.

  1. Yes, even on a small scale we can make a difference. Thanks for your initiative. I hope more people get inspired and will do so next year.
